As winter blankets the world in frosty hues, it brings with it a unique opportunity to slow down, reflect, and find joy in the simple pleasures of life. Enter hygge (pronounced hoo-ga), a Danish concept that has taken the world by storm. Hygge encapsulates the art of creating a warm, cosy atmosphere that fosters comfort and contentment, especially during the colder months. In this blog post, we’ll explore the essence of hygge and discover how you can infuse your winter with cosiness and comfort.

Now I have to admit, and I’ve said it before, that winter is not my favourite season. With chronic pain and illness I find the winter to be harsh and painful if I don’t take care of myself. That being said, since introducing some of these recommendations into my own home, I’ve been able to find a lot more joy in these colder months.

  1. Candlelit Evenings: The Soft Glow of Hygge Illuminate your space with soft, warm candlelight. Candles not only provide a gentle ambiance but also contribute to a sense of relaxation and intimacy. Choose scented candles for an extra touch of indulgence. Personally I love the Wickford & Co. gingerbread scented candles through the winter – it gives the illusion that I know how to bake!

  2. Wrap Yourself in Warmth: Hygge-Inspired Blankets and Textures Embrace the tactile side of hygge by surrounding yourself with soft blankets, plush cushions, and warm textures. Create a cocoon of comfort that invites you to unwind and savour the snug feeling of winter. Soft fleece or chunky knit, whatever your style is there is something out there for you. You could even go all in with a heated throw blanket!

  3. Sip and Savour: Cosy Winter Drinks Hygge encourages the enjoyment of warm, comforting beverages. Brew a cup of your favourite tea, cocoa, or mulled wine. The act of sipping slowly and savouring each mouthful adds a delightful layer to the hygge experience.

  4. Create a Reading Nook: Lose Yourself in a Good Book Designate a corner of your home as a reading nook. Furnish it with a comfortable chair or blanket fort, a good book, and perhaps a hot drink. Let yourself get lost in the pages. My current read is The Mountain Is You: Transforming Self-Sabotage Into Self-Mastery by Brianna Wiest.

  5. Hygge-Inspired Décor: Simplicity and Natural Elements Decorate your space with simplicity in mind. Opt for natural materials like wood and stone, and incorporate elements from nature, such as pinecones or evergreen branches. These touches bring a sense of the outdoors inside, promoting tranquillity. We have a huge holly tree in our garden which is full of bright red berries at the moment so some of them will soon be decorating our window sills.

  6. Unplug and Unwind: Hygge without Screens Embrace the hygge spirit by taking a break from screens. Instead, engage in activities like board games, crafting, or simply enjoying a quiet moment of reflection. Disconnecting from technology allows you to fully immerse yourself in the present.

  7. Share Hygge Moments: Quality Time with Loved Ones Hygge is often best experienced in the company of others. Invite friends or family over for a cosy evening. Share stories, laughter, and good food in an environment that fosters connection and warmth.

  8. Comfort Food: Hygge in Every Bite Indulge in hearty, comforting meals that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Whether it’s a homemade soup, a hearty stew, or freshly baked treats, let your taste buds revel in the pleasure of soul-soothing comfort food. Technically I’m on a book buying ban but I have been very tempted by this: Comfort: A Winter Cookbook

  9. Mindful Hygge: Presence over Perfection Remember that hygge is about the experience, not perfection. Embrace imperfections and focus on the present moment. Whether you’re sipping tea, enjoying a flickering candle, or wrapped in a cosy blanket, relish the simplicity of the here and now.

  10. Hygge All Year Round: Carry the Cosy Vibe Beyond Winter While hygge is particularly associated with winter, its principles can be applied throughout the year. Embrace a lifestyle of cosiness and comfort, finding joy in the little things that make each day special.

Hygge is a timeless practice that encourages us to find solace and joy in the midst of winter’s chill. As you create your own hygge-inspired haven, remember that it’s not just about the physical surroundings but the atmosphere of warmth, connection, and contentment that you cultivate. Embrace hygge, and the cosy spirit of winter.

At the heart of hygge is a willingness to set aside time for simply being with people, and, ideally, having all the senses engaged. Louisa Thomsen Brits
