As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, winter brings with it a unique charm. Cosy jumpers, hot chocolate, and snow-covered landscapes make this season special. However, the cold weather can also take a toll on our physical and mental well-being. That’s why it’s essential to prioritize self-care during the winter months. In this blog post, we’ll explore some winter self-care essentials to help you stay happy, healthy, and warm throughout the season.

Everyone who knows me knows that winter is NOT my season. I thrive in the summer sun, and my joints protest against the cold and wet British winters (thank you chronic illness). However, it is a beautiful season, and as long as we take care of ourselves we can all enjoy everything it has to offer.

Top tips:

1. Hydration: Winter might not make you feel as thirsty as the scorching summers we’ve been having, but it’s crucial to stay hydrated. The cold, dry air can lead to dehydration, which can have a significant impact on your skin, energy levels, and overall health. Be sure to drink plenty of water, herbal teas, and hot soups to keep yourself well-hydrated. I find having a large water bottle I carry around helps a lot.

2. Skincare: Cold, windy weather can wreak havoc on your skin! I know it does mine. To combat dryness and keep your skin looking gorgeous, invest in a good quality moisturizer. Personally, I love the Aveeno range as its gentle on my sensitive skin. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen even in winter, as the sun’s UV rays can still penetrate the clouds.

3. Warm Clothing: Keeping warm is vital during the winter months. Invest in cosy jumpers, scarves, and mittens to protect yourself from the cold. Layering is the key to staying comfortable. Additionally, a good winter coat and insulated boots are handy for staying warm while braving the elements.

4. Nutrition: Indulge in nourishing, comfort foods that keep you warm and satisfied. Think about soups, stews, and hot cereals. Porridge with nuts and honey is my winter favourite. Incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your diet to support your immune system during flu season. I love the Pinch of Nom cookbooks, especially the comfort food one.

5. Exercise: It’s easy to become less active during the winter, but staying physically active is essential for your well-being. Find indoor activities like yoga, Pilates, or dancing to stay fit. If you’re up for it, embrace the winter wonderland with walking or hiking (just wrap up warm).

6. Mental Health: The winter months can sometimes bring feelings of sadness and lethargy, commonly known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). To take care of your mental health, consider practicing mindfulness, meditation, or yoga. Also, make time for hobbies you enjoy, and connect with loved ones to combat feelings of isolation.

7. Warm Beverages: There’s something soothing about sipping on a hot drink from a giant mug when it’s cold outside. Embrace the season with hot chocolate, herbal teas, mulled wine, or a comforting bowl of soup. These warm drinks can help you relax and unwind during the chilly winter evenings. I occasionally treat myself to some chocolate stirrers for when I want something extra sweet.

8. Cosy Home Environment: Create a warm and inviting atmosphere at home by lighting scented candles, using soft throws and blankets, and decorating with warm colours. A cosy environment can have a significant impact on your mood and overall well-being. For me, that also includes a fluffy hot water bottle and gingerbread wax melts.

9. Sleep: A good night’s sleep is crucial for your overall health, especially during the winter. Ensure your bedroom is a warm, comfortable, and quiet sanctuary. Invest in soft bedding and establish a relaxing bedtime routine to improve your sleep quality. Night time tea and pillow mist are my essentials!
