“Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert is a transformative exploration into the realms of creativity and inspiration. Gilbert, renowned for her work “Eat Pray Love,” delves into the nuanced aspects of creativity, offering insights and guidance to unleash one’s artistic potential. It has been a popular book for creative spirits worldwide.

I originally listened to this book on audible a few years ago, and as an added bonus Gilbert narrates the book herself which adds her personality to it. I LOVED it so I am going back for a second listen, or I may even have to treat myself to a physical copy so I can attack it with a highlighter.

“The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them.” Elizabeth Gilbert

In this book, Gilbert challenges the conventional beliefs surrounding creativity, emphasizing the importance of curiosity, courage, and perseverance in the creative process. She shares personal anecdotes from herself and friends, encouraging readers to embrace their innate creativity without fear of failure or external judgment.

One of the standout aspects of “Big Magic” is Gilbert’s infectious enthusiasm and her ability to reframe the way people approach creativity. It is an absolute joy to listen to/ read. She presents creativity as a living force, inviting individuals to engage with it actively, nurturing their ideas and allowing them to flourish.

Moreover, Gilbert discusses the concept of “ideas” having a life of their own, seeking a vessel through which to manifest. This notion encourages individuals to seize inspiration when it strikes and commit to bringing their ideas to fruition. While some may find the book’s approach unconventional or overly optimistic, Gilbert’s uplifting and motivational tone resonates with many readers. Her insights provide a refreshing perspective on the creative process, empowering individuals to overcome self-doubt and embrace their creative journeys.

There have been some criticisms of Big Magic of course, stating that it is full of “new age hocus pocus” etcetera, but personally I’m all for a bit hocus pocus in my life.

Overall, “Big Magic” serves as a beacon for anyone seeking to rekindle their creative spark or navigate the challenges that accompany artistic endeavours. It’s an engaging read filled with wisdom, encouragement, and practical advice, making it a valuable resource for aspiring and seasoned creatives alike.

At the time of reading Big Magic, I had no big creative goals in my personal or work life. However, it did inspire me to be more creative in my existing habits such as journaling which brought me so much joy. I think a second listen is in order now that creative elements have crept more into my day-to-day life, and sometimes fear holds me back. I want to be unapologetically creative.

“A creative life is an amplified life.”

If you have read the book, please give me your own opinions on it!

All my love, Bridie.
